On May 31, 1889, heavy rain caused the old South Fork Dam to burst, sending torrents of water flooding into Johnstown. Over 2,000 people died that day in one of the worst natural disasters in American history. Today, the Johnstown Flood National Memorial stands as a testament to that disaster, located on a 165 acre site that preserves the remains of the dam. The visitor's center has exhibits on the tragedy, as does the nearby Johnstown Flood Museum.
