Shaver's Creek Environmental Center This outdoor environmental education center is located half way between State College and Huntingdon. It is operated by Penn State University as an outreach source for environmental education. A welcome center, an herb and flower garden, an interactive exhibit room, a bird of prey center and picnic areas are all located on the site. Following the peaks of Laurel Mountain between Ohiopyle to Johnstown, Laurel Ridge State Park offers a myriad of scenic views and recreational possibilities. Frequented by hikers, the park boasts the popular 70-mile (112-kilometer) Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. In the winter the trail can be used for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Bald Eagle State Park features a range of activities in its 5,900-acre park, inlcuding numerous boat launches, a marina, a swimming beach, several picnic areas, a designated hunting area, 11 mi (18 km) of hiking trails and two camping areas. In the winter, sections of the lake are open for ice-fishing and skating and other areas for sledding and cross-country skiing.
