    Shaver's Creek Environmental Center
    This outdoor environmental education center is located half way between State College and Huntingdon. It is operated by Penn State University as an outreach source for environmental education. A welcome center, an herb and flower garden, an interactive exhibit room, a bird of prey center and picnic areas are all located on the site. The center is a popular destination for families and offers hiking trails, discovery programs and adult education programs.

    Laurel Ridge State Park

    Following the peaks of Laurel Mountain between Ohiopyle to Johnstown, Laurel Ridge State Park offers a myriad of scenic views and recreational possibilities. Frequented by hikers, the park boasts the popular 70-mile (112-kilometer) Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. In the winter the trail can be used for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. There are a number of shelters found throughout the park, close to the trail route.

    Shawnee State Park

    Shawnee State Park sprawls over 3,900 acres and is dominated by the central Shawnee Lake. The park offers outdoor enthusiasts plenty of space for camping, boating, swimming, hiking, game hunting, snowmobiling, ice fishing and skating.

    Bald Eagle State Park

    Bald Eagle State Park features a range of activities in its 5,900-acre park, inlcuding numerous boat launches, a marina, a swimming beach, several picnic areas, a designated hunting area, 11 mi (18 km) of hiking trails and two camping areas. In the winter, sections of the lake are open for ice-fishing and skating and other areas for sledding and cross-country skiing. Numerous species of animals can be observed here, including the Bald Eagle.

    Black Moshannon State Park

    Located in Centre County on PA Route 504, Black Moshannon State Park offers 3,394 acres of camping, boating, biking and fishing in a watershed of the Black Moshannon forest. Winter recreation in the park includes snowmobiling, skating and cross-country skiing.

    Bald Eagle State Forest

    The Bald Eagle State Forest is a large wildlife area that is home to deer, bear, wild turkey and other small game. Thirteen streams run through the forest that are ideal for fishing. Hiking, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing are popular activities in this forest.

    Laurel Summit State Park

    Primarily used as a picnic area, Laurel Summit State Park offers a number of picnic tables, a group pavilion, water facilities and restrooms. Located 2,739 ft (835 m) above sea level, the park tends to be a bit cooler than the nearby communities of Jennerstown, Laurel Mountain and Ligonier.

    Blue Knob State Park

    Named for the mountain in its center, Blue Knob State Park is thousands of feet above sea level and usually several degrees cooler than the nearby towns and cities. Affording panoramic views of Pennsylvania's Ridge and Valley Province to its east, the park is also used for swimming, backpacking, camping, mountain biking, fishing, horeback riding and swimming during the seasonable summer months.

    Laurel Mountain State Park

    Laurel Mountain State Park is located in between Ligonier and Jennerstown in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Frequented by skiers and snowboarders, the 3,000 ft (914 m) mountain is home to the the Springs at Laurel Mountain, one of the first ski areas in Pennsylvania. The hill is open from December to March and contains a retail shop and a food area.
