The orchestra first began playing in 1929 as a small group. The season includes a variety of performances. Also available is the Youth Orchestra, which was established in 1962 for young musicians. Reserved seating is available, including balcony seats. Senior rates are offered.

The symphony is a non-profit community college. In total, the group performs six concerts a year, one of which was intended for families. Funding is provided from ticket sales, donations and grant support. Sponsorship is provided from many of the local companies.

Founded as a string ensemble in 1928, the Altoona Symphony Orchestra has since grown to employ 75 musicians. Performances are held in the Mishler Theatre.
